Providing Research Experiences to Students

The Biology Department strives to provide at least 80% of our about 1,000 undergraduate majors with independent research experiences, but has limited funding for travel and other research support. By supporting this goal, you will help our students become more competitive and better qualified for research and professional careers.

Undergraduate research experiences substantially impact the short-term and long-term career trajectories of Biology majors, whether they go on to pursue professional or graduate degrees or whether they go immediately into the workforce. Students who engage in independent research are more competitive because independent research experiences can enhance their critical thinking and scientific communication skills while providing exposure to cutting edge/innovative technologies.

Your gift today will help us meet our goal of providing support and travel funds for up to four Biology majors during the summer or academic year.

“Through your support, the Biology department has the potential to the increase the number of undergraduate research assistantships by almost 20%, allowing more of our students to engage in research and subsequently to network with other scientists across the country at research conferences and symposia.” – Dr. Casonya Johnson, Academic Unit Head
